What sits behind the hologram?
A public Business of Baseball episode presented by CohnReznick introduces MLB memorabilia authentication. The useful question for this Desk is what has to remain bound together after the first label is applied.
MLB says its program authenticates only eligible items that an authenticator actually witnesses being signed or used. A witnessed item receives a unique hologram, and its serial number connects to a database record. That sequence begins with an observed event. The hologram is the lookup handle for the record. The item passes through people and places.
eBay describes a trading card transaction that routes an eligible item to PSA for physical inspection. Its process reviews the listing details, applies an authentication sticker and QR-linked record after inspection, then uses tracked delivery. These are separate checks tied to a particular item and transaction. Source: eBay Authenticity Guarantee.
That matters because a valid-looking number cannot verify every object bearing it. PSA warns that counterfeit grading inserts can reuse real certification numbers drawn from public sources. Source: PSA Certification Verification.
A provenance story can be fabricated.
The U.S. Department of Justice reported a sports memorabilia dealer who doctored provenance for items falsely represented as Willie Mays game-used memorabilia. The FBI’s Operation Bullpen history describes a wider network of forgers, fraudulent authenticators, wholesalers, and retailers. These records show how an unverified story can travel through a sales channel; they do not measure the overall fraud rate. Source: DOJ · Source: FBI.
Authentication is a controlled workflow.
The recurring trust pattern in this bounded case is a chain: observe the object or event, identify it, bind it to a record, preserve each handoff, verify the current record, and explicitly supersede a compromised or corrected record. A sticker, certificate number, or digest can serve a part of that chain. Each needs the surrounding evidence to have meaning.
